Pipeline safety

Every person. Every pipeline. Every day.

Safety is foundational to how we operate. From pipeline construction and maintenance to daily operations and emergency preparedness, we are committed to protecting the public, our employees and the environment. Our safety programs take a proactive, data-driven approach to monitoring, maintaining and improving our systems. We seek to uphold strong standards of safety, performance and environmental responsibility across every mile of pipeline.

A system-wide safety commitment

Safety that goes beyond compliance

Our Pipeline Safety Management System follows the American Petroleum Institute’s Recommended Practice 1173, the industry standard for developing a pipeline safety management system. Since adopting the system in 2020, we have embedded continuous improvement into our operations. We comply with all applicable federal, state and local safety regulations, including those from the U.S. Department of Transportation (49 CFR 192 and 195). Our teams often go beyond minimum requirements, using advanced technology, real-time data and employee empowerment to drive a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.

Key focus areas

Boardwalk’s safety strategy centers on proactive prevention, continuous training, and public awareness to keep our systems operating safely, reliably and in full compliance every day.

Integrity Management Program (IMP)

Our IMP is a comprehensive framework that monitors pipeline conditions, identifies risks and guides system-wide improvements. Our risk-based assessments prioritize pipeline segments based on environmental sensitivity, operating pressure and proximity to population centers.

Emergency response preparedness

We maintain detailed emergency response plans and conduct regular training with employees and first responders. Rapid response, local coordination and readiness are central to our approach.

Public awareness & 811 programs

We actively engage the public, contractors and landowners through safety education programs and outreach. We also promote the 811 Program to help prevent damage and protect lives. Call 811 before you dig - it is free, fast and required by law.

Employee training

All operations employees receive ongoing safety training and are certified in compliance, hazard recognition and emergency response procedures. We foster a speak-up culture where every employee is empowered to stop work if something does not look right.

Right-of-Way Monitoring & Inspection Tools

Our teams regularly patrol our pipeline routes to identify potential threats, unauthorized activities or environmental changes that may impact safety. We also use advanced in-line inspection tools to detect any corrosion, deformation or cracking and to help maintain system integrity.

Protecting the Environment

Our pipeline safety and integrity work supports broader environmental goals like emissions reduction and land conservation. Leak detection and repair (LDAR) programs, hydrocarbon spill prevention protocols and environmentally sensitive restoration practices are closely integrated with our pipeline operations.

Culture of safety and accountability

Empowered people, safer systems

Safety is everyone’s job. We foster a culture of shared responsibility, where every employee is trained, supported and encouraged to take action. Whether in the field or at a corporate office, our teams work together to maintain a safe and respectful environment that reflects our core values.

If you suspect a pipeline emergency

What to do

If you witness signs of a gas leak, such as dead vegetation or hissing sounds, please leave the area immediately. Do not attempt to investigate or operate any vehicle or equipment.
