Technical details

The SECURE Project proposes new and upgraded compression facilities across Mississippi and Louisiana to enhance natural gas flow along the eastern Gulf Coast. Gulf South will install additional compression at existing stations in Jasper County, MS, Forrest County, MS, and Madison Parish, LA; and construct a new compressor station in Hinds County, MS. These upgrades will increase system capacity to support regional energy demands and utility reliability, particularly benefiting utilities such as Southern Companies and Florida Power & Light.

Key Project Components

Key Project Components

  • New Compressor Station: Construction of a new compressor station in Hinds County, MS.
  • Compressor Upgrades: Installation of additional compression at existing stations in Jasper County, MS (Jasper CS), Forrest County, MS (Forrest CS) and Madison Parish, LA (Tallulah CS).
  • System Capacity Expansion: Enhances Gulf South’s ability to deliver reliable natural gas service across the Gulf Coast region.

Construction / Operation / Safety

The SECURE Project will be constructed and operated in accordance with rigorous safety and engineering standards established by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). During construction, qualified inspectors will oversee each phase to help ensure compliance with safety protocols, including thorough testing of equipment and systems before facilities become operational. Compressor stations will be equipped with emergency shutdown systems and monitored 24/7 to track gas flow, pressure and equipment conditions.

Operational safety will be reinforced through regular inspections and maintenance to detect and address potential issues early. Gulf South also engages with local communities through public awareness programs, providing safety information and emergency contact details. Compressor stations are designed to minimize risk to surrounding areas and include features such as automatic and manual valves for rapid isolation, along with coordination with first responders to help ensure preparedness.

Environmental Considerations

Gulf South is committed to responsible environmental stewardship throughout the SECURE Project. Compressor station upgrades and new construction will be designed and operated in accordance with federal and state environmental regulations, including permitting and compliance requirements set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other relevant agencies. These standards help ensure that construction and operations are conducted in a way that protects surrounding communities and natural resources.

Noise management is also a key consideration in the design of compressor stations. Gulf South will implement noise-reduction technologies to maintain sound levels within federally accepted limits at nearby noise-sensitive areas. Noise surveys will be conducted before and after construction to verify compliance and help ensure that operations remain unobtrusive to surrounding communities.

Project FAQs

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.

How are changes to the project scope managed?

Changes to the project scope, often referred to as scope creep, can impact timelines and budgets. To manage changes effectively, it's essential to have a formal change order process in place. This process should outline how changes are proposed, evaluated, and approved. All stakeholders should be involved in discussions about changes to ensure that everyone understands the implications. Documenting changes and their impacts helps maintain transparency and accountability throughout the project.

How do we establish a budget for our construction project?

Establishing a budget for a construction project involves several steps. First, you need to define the project's scope and requirements. Next, gather estimates from contractors and suppliers for materials, labor, and other costs. It's also wise to include a contingency fund for unexpected expenses, typically around 10-20% of the total budget. Regularly reviewing and adjusting the budget throughout the project can help manage costs effectively and ensure the project stays on track financially.

How is communication handled during the project?

Effective communication is vital for the success of any construction project. Regular meetings should be scheduled to discuss progress, address concerns, and make decisions. Utilizing project management software can facilitate communication among team members, allowing for real-time updates and document sharing. Additionally, establishing clear lines of communication between contractors, clients, and stakeholders ensures everyone is informed and aligned throughout the project lifecycle.

Regulatory access & participation

Gulf South is regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), a federal agency that oversees the transportation of natural gas projects that cross state lines. The FERC’s role is to help ensure these projects are safe, environmentally responsible, and in the public interest. Before any major project can move forward, the FERC reviews project plans in detail and decides whether it meets all the necessary standards.
