The PLUSS Project is designed to increase the capacity and reliability of Gulf South’s natural gas system in southern Louisiana. The project includes construction of a new compressor station in Ascension Parish, Louisiana, and replacement of segments of Gulf South’s existing 30-inch-diameter pipeline in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana. These upgrades will support growing energy demands and improve service to multiple end-use customers across the region.
Key Project Components
- New Compressor Station: Construction of the new Sorrento Compressor Station facility in Ascension Parish, Louisiana to support system pressure and flow.
- Pipeline Replacement: Upgrades to existing 30-inch pipeline segments in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana to enhance capacity and reliability.
- System Expansion: Supports energy accessibility and delivery for utility customers and industrial users in southern Louisiana.
Construction / Operation / Safety
The PLUSS Project will be constructed and operated in accordance with safety and engineering standards established by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). During construction, qualified inspectors will oversee each phase to ensure compliance with safety protocols, including testing of welds, pressure systems, and equipment. Pipelines will be strength-tested and compressor stations will be equipped with emergency shutdown systems and monitored 24/7 to support safe operation.
Operational safety is maintained through regular inspections, aerial and ground surveys, and advanced monitoring systems that track gas flow and pressure. Gulf South also engages with local communities through public awareness programs, providing safety information and emergency contact details. Both pipeline and compressor station facilities are designed to help reduce risk to surrounding areas and include features such as automatic and manual valves for rapid isolation, along with coordination with first responders.
Environmental Considerations
Gulf South integrates environmental stewardship into all phases of the PLUSS Project. Both pipeline and compressor station components will be designed and operated in compliance with federal and state environmental regulations, including permitting and monitoring requirements. These standards help ensure that construction and operations are conducted responsibly and with minimal impact on surrounding communities and ecosystems.
Noise management is a key consideration for the new compressor station. Gulf South will implement noise-reduction technologies to maintain sound levels within federally accepted limits at nearby noise-sensitive areas, such as homes and businesses. Noise surveys will be conducted before and after construction to verify compliance and ensure that operations minimize disturbance.

Project support
Gulf South is regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), a federal agency that oversees the transportation of natural gas projects that cross state lines. FERC’s role is to ensure these projects are safe, environmentally responsible, and in the public interest. Before any major project can move forward, FERC reviews project plans in detail and decides whether they meet all the necessary standards.
